Propolis - "recognized as a powerful, all-natural anti-biotic"
nurse bee

One of the most well documented products from the honey bee, propolis or "Russian Penicillin" is known in countries outside the United States as a powerful, all natural, broad spectrum anti-biotic. The former Soviet Union has performed many scientific studies into the effects of propolis. Recently, Cuba opened a multi-million dollar facility dedicated to the scientific study of propolis and the other products from beehives.

This sticky, brown resinous substance is collected by honeybees from various plants and mixed with wax, pollen and salivary secretions. Propolis is used to sterilize their home against infection, bees also use propolis as a multi-purpose cement and varnish. Propolis contains approximately 55% resins & balms, 30% wax, 10% etheric oils and 5% pollen. Rich in amino acids and trace elements, it also has a high vitamin content, including the valuable bioflavanoids, Vitamin K. These basic ingredients are what give propolis its dynamic bacteria destroying power, some of the best originating from North America. It is believed that the father of medicine, Hippocrates, prescribed the use of propolis to help heal sores and ulcers, internally and externally. Unlike penicillin or other drugs, propolis is always effective, because of the inability of bacteria and viruses to build tolerances against it and has been clinically verified through its use in more than 16,000 situations. Danish scientist, Dr. K. Lund Aagaard is considered an expert on propolis states: "The whole research program had a single purpose, namely, to obtain a substance with the greatest efficiency against the greatest number of diseases. The numerous healings are relevant by themselves and the number of people who use propolis is ever increasing."

Propolis is harvested from traps in the beehive and is available in various forms to be ingested internally or applied externally. As a tincture, it is an excellent choice for disinfecting and protecting cuts and abrasions. Since wax is part of its makeup it can act as a bandage to seal the wound! Propolis is also available in a form where it can be taken internally as a supplement aiding against bacterial and viral infections. As an ingredient in salves, it's ideal because of its anti-bacterial and anti-fungal qualities.
